Under the supervision of a veterinarian, the community works together to build a chicken coop, care for the chickens, and gather the eggs; villagers are also taught how to market chicks and eggs at the marketplace for a profit. They are provided a brood of about 30 to 50 chicks that can be reared as laying hens, along with a rooster to ensure more baby chicks for the future. A good hen can lay as many as 200 eggs a year—plenty to eat, with some left over to sell. These chickens are a livelihood and vital source of food for people living in communities with few resources. (Money is given to Samaritan’s Purse for this project).
